For Utilization Review Nurses ·
What you'll accomplish
A criteria version comparison that used to take 45 minutes of manual review now takes 10 minutes with Claude Pro's long-context window. Before your next team briefing, you'll know exactly what changed, what was removed, and what new documentation requirements apply.
What you'll need
When InterQual or MCG releases a quarterly update, you typically receive:
Request both the current and previous version from your UM platform administrator if you don't have both.
For lengthy criteria documents, focus on the sections most relevant to your high-volume case types. You don't need to paste the entire 200-page document. Paste the specific chapters that affect your review work (e.g., "Acute Medical Chapter 3: Respiratory Conditions").
Most criteria PDFs allow text selection and copy. Select the relevant section from the old version and paste it into a text document. Do the same for the same section from the new version.
Go to {{tool:Claude.url}} and start a new conversation. Make sure you're in the Pro interface ({{tool:Claude.plan}} subscription activated).
In Claude, type the following, then paste both documents below it:
I need you to compare two versions of clinical criteria used in utilization review. I'll paste the OLD version first, then the NEW version. Please:
1. List ALL changes: additions, removals, and modifications
2. Highlight any changes that affect documentation requirements
3. Identify any changes to threshold criteria (vital signs, lab values, functional criteria)
4. Note any changes that affect common diagnoses like pneumonia, COPD, CHF, hip fracture
5. Summarize in a format I can share with my UR team as a briefing email

What you should see: A structured comparison identifying specific changes, with a summary section you can copy for a team briefing.
Troubleshooting: If Claude says the document is too long, reduce the text by focusing on one sub-section at a time (e.g., just the "Admission Criteria" section, not the entire chapter). Claude Pro can typically handle 10,000–15,000 words per message.
After reviewing the comparison, ask Claude:
Based on these criteria changes, write a 5-bullet email summary I can send to my UR nursing team. Focus on: what changed, what it means for their documentation, effective date, and one example of a case type that will be affected.
What you should see: A ready-to-send team briefing email. Paste into Outlook, add the effective date and your signature, and send.
Payer Policy Change Analysis:
Compare these two versions of a payer's prior authorization policy for [service type]. Identify: added requirements, removed criteria, changed documentation requirements, and any new exclusions. Summarize changes that affect our authorization approval rate.
CMS Regulation Change Summary:
I'm pasting a section of a new CMS rule alongside the previous version. Identify: effective dates for each change, what's required vs. recommended, and any documentation changes that affect utilization review nursing workflow.
